Memorial Day Ride
Eight years ago my wife and I moved into our current house. Our close proximity to some of the best trails in the county was motivating me to take up mountain biking again. It wasn’t long after our move before my next door neighbor Tim and his father in law pulled up into the driveway after a ride to unload their bikes. I had completely lost touch with current state of mountain biking and I was intrigued to see them exit the vehicle with shin guards and protective gear. The idea of downhill riding dismantled all the preconceived notions I had of mountain biking based my past cross country riding experience. Coming from a freestyle snowboarding background and unable to satisfy my downhill fix during the summers, I had to get in on this type of riding. Tim helped me pick out a new bike which I wouldn’t start riding for two more years due to law school. Eventually Tim moved, leaving his father-in-law without a riding partner. That’s when I met Jimbo.

47 years old at that point, Jimbo was an inspiration from the beginning. Tim raved about Jimbo’s incredible fitness and how motivating it was to watch him ride. Jimbo truly dispelled any angst I had about aging and still being able to charge on a bike. We soon started riding daily where he pushed me to ride hard and taught me how to handle the most technical trails whether they were downhill or uphill. Jimbo set the bar incredibly high and has been handing my ass to me since day 1 . Now in his 50′s, I’m here to say that he hasn’t lost a step.
At least once a year for the past 5 years, Jimbo and I have had at least one epic ride that stands out and sticks in my memory. Today we hit up some steep, technical trails in south Orange County, some of which have gotten the best of me over the past few years. Today however, following Jimbo’s lines, I was able to clean some of the hardest sections. Thanks Jimbo for another perfect ride. – Jeff
